I'm a very practical person, and unless I know that that new dress that I intend to buy can be worn for years and still remain fashionable and trendy, I won't buy it.
We moved to NYC over 4 years ago and all this time I've been carefully watching what women in New York wear every season, year after year. And I came to conclusion, that not every woman (unless you are a real deal fashionista!) buys a new coat every year. They, just like me, prefer to buy timeless items for their wardrobe.
And here's what I came up with:
NO.1 Skinny Jeans or Pants
No matter what the future or the current trend dictates, these skinny pants/jeans/trousers (whatever you call them) will always be there. I personally prefer Zara brand trousers. The ones one the picture below were about USD $ 80.00 when I bought them 4 years ago. I only dry clean them, and that, I am pretty sure, extended their life.
On the Zara website, I couldn't find these, but there's a lot of others to choose from. Check it out:
Keep in mind your body types and wear these jeans with something that flatters your siluette. For instance:
NO.2 Wide Brim Wool Hat
I've been seeing these hats for years in NYC. The trendy color may change (they say this year YOU'VE GOT TO HAVE A BEIGE OR MERLOT WOOL HAT!), but if you just get a solid black or neutral wide brim hat, or even go for a splash of color (my friend has a bright fucsia color hat and it looks awesome on her!), you'll have a classy timeless hat for a very long time. For instance, when I started seeing these hats on the streets of NYC, I pulled one of my old hats that I bought back in Europe, and it looks just as if I bought it today. I'll have a picture of it soon, but for now here are some ideas from various brands: expensive and not.

The first girl on the picture wears a fedora hat, the last one wears a floppy brim hat and both of these wide brim hat types are trendy. A very trendy embellishment this year is feathers:

NO.3 Army Green Jackets with Leather Sleeves
I got one (finally!) for myself this year.
I see it pretty much everywhere, in various styles. Here are some ideas for you:
NO.4 Infinity Scarf
I would suggest to invest in a really good handmade wool scarf in neutral colors so that most of your fall/winter clothes can be worn with it. I do love beige, but any solid colors would do great. Last year I crocheted one myself, and still wear it (see my first picture).
NO. 5 Small Quilted Leather Bag with Long Straps
Yes, it has to be quilted (remember Chanel?) and with some metal details, or a chain strap.
NO. 6 Stacked Rings, Tiny Jewelry with Bars and Other Geometric Forms
To be honest, I don't understand why girls wear those little sticks around their neck, but it appears to be trendy year after year. I don't make that, so I am going to post pictures of my own hand made rib cage ring that may be the closest to the stacked ring design (but it's not stacked).
NO. 7 Yoga Pants
Doctors say, Yoga pants are NOT meant for everyday wear. Actually, I don't wear them unless I am trying to get cozy at home or doing an actual yoga session or working out. But many girls like wearing them everywhere due to the attention that they get and because of the ease of style. So I would suggest to get a pair of quality yoga pants that will accentuate what you like about yourself.

NO.8 Buns and Top Knots
I've seen this trend in 2011, and I see it now. Nothing changes here. Moreover, guys started wearing these buns too. It's contagious!

Remember that sexy soccer player with a hair bun? Pablo Osvaldo, here he is:
NO.9 Dr. Martin Boots and Ballerina Shoes
Yes, everyone in New York wears Ballerina Converse shoes:
Just kidding. It's actually just flats, and women in NYC wear them all year long, even in the winter. Moreover, there are girls who walk on the streets with bare legs and in those flats. Don't do it unless you are a real New Yorker- somehow they know how to pull it off.
These are cool:
And these are awesome!
This year I see this trend: Lace-Up Flats
I'm sure this lace-up trend will eventually fade away, but classic flats will always remain on demand.
As for Dr. Martin boots, I am actually looking for something cool for myself. Here are my dream boots (space/cosmos theme is super trendy right now):

NO. 10 Red Lipstick
Elle recently dedicated a whole article on the red lipstick topic: Rich Red, Pink Red, Plum Red, Berry Red- it almost feels like it became a cult here in NYC. So, as long as Taylor Swift keeps wearing it, rest assure, you'll stay trendy and fashionable. Plus, wearing red lipstick can be one of the best options to brighten up your fall/winter look.
And that concludes my top 10 timeless things list. It may be biased, so you'd need to come to NYC to witness it yourself.
